_How to apply a color scheme to your home

You know which colors you like, you made a mood board, and you have a beautiful and cohesive Pinterest board going. But now what? What is the next step, and how do you decide which walls, rooms, or pieces of furniture to apply which colors to? How did things suddenly get so complicated and overwhelming, and now you’re considering just forgetting about the whole thing and leaving your walls opaque couché, officially the world’s ugliest color?

No! You don’t need to stress, and you don’t have to learn to live with a color you hate. Here are some uncomplicated, practical ways you can turn that color palette you fell in love with into a reality. And you don’t even need to be a professional interior designer. Promise.

1. Determine the mood and style.

Decide on the mood and style you want to create in your house. Do you prefer a bright and vibrant space or a calm and cozy environment? This will help narrow down the color choices, and it will help you decide which colors to use in abundance and which colors to use for accents. A color that you might consider a great accent color, only to be used on a throw pillow here or a framed print there, might be exactly what another person with a love of the same colors would like to see on an entire wall. Maybe even an entire room. Figure out what your style is and how your color palette fits into that.

2. Choose a base color.

Start by selecting a base color that will set the overall tone of your house. This color is typically a neutral and can be used for walls, floors, or larger pieces of furniture.

Some popular and universally applicable base color options are:

This base color will serve as a unifying element.

3. Select accent colors.

Once you have chosen a base color, choose one or two accent colors from your palette. These will complement and enhance the base color. These colors can be used for smaller furniture pieces, decorative items, or accent walls. Remember to consider the color wheel and select colors that go harmoniously together. For example, you can pair a cool base color (such as gray) with warm accent colors (such as mustard yellow or turquoise).

4. Experiment with samples.

Not ready to take the plunge quite yet? I understand! I take a while before I make a decision, and I tend to go back and forth a lot, doubting myself and asking opinions, before finally committing. So, of course, I do the same when it comes to decorating my home.

Something that helped me a lot was using small samples in different areas of my home to see how they looked under different lighting conditions. Paint a small area, and then sit with it for a day or two. Go about your business, live your life, do your chores, and every now and then, glance over to the paint samples on your walls. You will be drawn to the color that suits that space the best; just give yourself some time.

5. Consider the flow of your home.

When applying a color scheme, consider how it will flow from room to room. You can do this by using similar hues or shades of the same color. You can also choose complementary colors. If you paint every room or space in your home a completely different color, you can lose a sense of cohesion, and it can turn out a bit like a patchwork blanket. Now, if you like the patchwork blanket look, go for it! But if you prefer a more consistent feel throughout your house, try using similar shades or complementary colors as you move from room to room. And let me circle back to my previous tip: experiment with samples. You don’t need to have it all figured out before you start. Try things out and let them sink in. Consider your options and the way they work for your space.

In the end, it is worth remembering that the way you decorate your home and the colors you choose are highly personal choices. There is no right or wrong way to go about it. If the end result makes you happy and makes you feel comfortable in your space, then you have succeeded! Well done!

Choose colors and combinations that you love and that reflect your personality. You got this!
